Many new climbers know just enough information to get themselves into serious trouble. What happens when the clock is ticking and you or your partner are injured? Do you wait for help or try and perform your own self rescue? Sometimes holding out and waiting for help is the right answer but other times this may not be an option when time is of the essence. Our Self Rescue 101 course focuses on the fundamental practices of ascending ropes utilizing hitches and GriGri's and setting up 3:1 hauling and assisted hauling systems. Self Rescue 101 was designed to open the climbers mind to the possibilities of using their systems in different ways other than just climbing. This course will lay the foundation for higher level Self Rescue courses which can be very complex and confusing if you're new to this type of practice.

  • This course is for climbers who want a practical introduction to fundamental self-rescue systems and new ways to use their existing climbing equipment when problems arise.

  • Basic climbing, belaying, knot, and rope-management experience is helpful. Contact Golden State Guiding with your background so the guide can confirm that Self Rescue 101 is the appropriate starting point.

  • The course focuses on foundational systems such as ascending a rope with hitches or an assisted-braking device, building 3:1 hauling systems, and practicing assisted hauling techniques.

  • No single course can cover every emergency. Self Rescue 101 builds foundational problem-solving skills and prepares climbers for more advanced rescue training, but it does not replace sound judgment or professional emergency response.

  • Yes. Participants practice constructing and operating rescue systems under guide supervision so they can understand each step, identify common errors, and develop familiarity with the equipment.

  • Required gear depends on the venue and course plan. Golden State Guiding will provide a complete list explaining personal climbing equipment, technical items used during instruction, and anything supplied or available to rent.
