Knowing how to correctly lead climb and lead belay are important technical skills all serious climbers should have in their bag of tricks. In our Lead Climbing 101 course we'll teach you the necessary skills to lead climb and lead belay in a controlled environment. Our professionally trained AMGA Guides will provide hands on instruction throughout the course which includes safety checks, flaking ropes, spotting, belay techniques, clipping techniques, verbal commands and more. We'll thoroughly review and practice each of these techniques then apply the skills you've been recently taught to mock-leads on the rock so you get the feel for what it takes to lead confidently outdoors.

  • This course is for climbers who are comfortable top roping and want to begin learning outdoor lead climbing and lead belaying. Your guide will evaluate your experience and tailor the day appropriately.

  • No previous lead-climbing experience is required, but participants should have a solid foundation in climbing, knots, and top-rope belaying. Contact Golden State Guiding if you are unsure whether you are ready.

  • The course covers partner safety checks, rope flaking, spotting, lead-belaying techniques, clipping, verbal commands, rope management, and other habits needed for controlled outdoor lead climbing.

  • New skills are reviewed and practiced in a controlled environment before participants apply them through mock leads on rock. Progression depends on demonstrated skills, comfort, conditions, and guide judgment.

  • The course is available in San Diego, Joshua Tree, the Eastern Sierra, Los Angeles, and Holcomb Valley. The best venue depends on your dates, experience, weather, and course goals.

  • Lead Climbing 101 is a full-day course of approximately eight hours. Included technical equipment and anything you must bring are confirmed in the course details and pre-trip gear list.
