Golden State Guiding is a proud host of American Mountain Guides Association (AMGA), Single Pitch Instructor courses in San Diego, Joshua Tree National Park, Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, and the Eastern Sierra.

Looking to take your first step towards becoming a professional rock climbing guide? Join GSG Lead Guide, and AMGA Certified Rock Guide and SPI Provider, Spencer Huffman, for a 3 day, AMGA Single Pitch Instructor course at Mission Trails Regional Park and Mount Woodson in San Diego, Joshua Tree National Park, or Red Rock Canyon in Las Vegas, Nevada.

All candidates, upon completion of their AMGA Single Pitch Instructor course registration, will receive a detailed email within 24 hours outlining the course itinerary and curriculum.

Our AMGA Single Pitch Instructor courses are for recreational climbers looking to take their first step into becoming a professional rock climbing guide.   • You must be a Professional Member of the AMGA.

    You have a genuine interest in rock climbing and instructing novices on single pitch crags.

    You are at least 18 years old at the time of the course.

    You have at least 12 months prior climbing experience.

    You are an active climber with traditional lead climbing experience (leader placing pro).

    You have led a minimum of 15 traditional rock climbing routes (any grade).

    You are capable of comfortably climbing 5.8 while on a top rope.

    The above prerequisites are absolute minimums. Without having at least this amount experience you are unlikely to make best use of the training.

  • No meals, transportation, or accommodations are included in the cost of our SPI courses. Please be prepared to be able to drive to and from the climbing venues during any course being hosted.

  • UIAA/CE approved Climbing Helmet

    UIAA/CE approved Climbing Harness with belay loop

    Climbing shoes in which the candidate can climb up to 5.8

    Standard “lead climbing rack” - double rack of cams from # 0.3 - 3, single #4, stoppers

    At least 6 HMS “Pear-shaped” Locking Carabiners

    Two 48” (double length) sling, one of which is nylon

    Manual belay/rappel device (e.g. ATC, Reverso, etc)
- Releasable assisted-braking device (e.g. Petzl GriGri, Beal Birdie, etc)

    1 “Friction hitch” Loop (e.g. 13.5” Sterling Hollowblock, 35mm Beal Jammy, etc.)

    1 Cordelette (7mm nylon, 20ft long)

    1 Static Rope (9.5-10mm, at least 30m, 60m preferred)

    1 50 or 60m Dynamic Rope (9.4 to 10mm, suitable for leading and top-roping)

    Approach Shoes with sticky rubber

    Note-taking devices and a watch

  • No refunds will be given for any cancellations. If a candidate must cancel a course due to unforeseen circumstances, we are able to credit the candidate for a period of 12 months to re-enroll in a future course. We highly recommend all candidates purchase trip insurance before attending their course.
